The Alice Cruden Evenson and
Herbena Nygard Scholarship - $1000

Application deadline:  April 1, 2015
Award Date:  Fall 2015

This scholarship was established to provide support for BAAS majors who aspire to make a positive impact for the common good of others and whose career plans include some type of public service.  It was started in honor of Alice Cruden Evenson and Herbena Nygard.

Alice Cruden Evenson was born on April 8, 1919 in Hatton, North Dakota.  The important thing about Alice was that she was representative of so many women of her generation who pretty much lived their lives for other people…family, community, and country.  And she did it very well.  Her accomplishments were not known around the world but, when combined with those of so many women just like her, they made an indelible impact on the kind of lives that so many people are able to live now days.  She would do one of her quiet smiles that came right up from her heart if she thought that she played a role in helping students pursue careers that allowed them to have a similar kind effect on other people in their worlds.

Herbena Nygard always believed in the value of education.  She grew up poor and yet she always found a way to better herself educationally, believe in herself, and believe in the value and worth of others. She skipped several grades in school and ended up graduating at the top of her class in the small town of Berwick, North Dakota. She truly was a pioneer in terms of helping others.  She became a Registered Nurse, and had a long & successful career doing what she loved most.  This scholarship aptly represents those things most near and dear to her: the value of education, the value of helping others & helping them to believe in themselves, and the value of giving back to the community.
